De Mattos was last seen in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 9, 1965. He and his fiancee, Lucy Pacheco, visited his son that morning and then went for a drive in his gray/blue four-door 1957 Pontiac with license plate 5A-31514, saying they were going to the laundromat and would return soon. The car was never found, and neither De Mattos nor Pacheco was ever heard from again. He was bald, walked with a limp, wore eyeglasses, and left his diabetes medication behind. His case remains unsolved.
