Mercurio was last seen in Bardonia, New York on November 24, 1978, driving a 1966 Buick Vista Cruiser station wagon with New York license plate 761-FMX. The day before he disappeared, he told a friend that the friend would soon be reading about him in the paper. Neither Mercurio nor the Buick has ever been located, and the car has never been registered or impounded anywhere since. He has a scar on his chin. His case remains unsolved.
